The Speaker of the National Assembly, Thandi Modise, has declined a request by the African Transformation Movement (ATM) for the motion of no confidence against President Cyril Ramaphosa to be conducted through a secret ballot. This was communicated through a statement issued by Parliament on Tuesday.
The ATM has filed an urgent court application to force a secret ballot to be allowed. The party will be announcing the court's decision later this Wednesday morning. The motion, which is expected to take place in Parliament on Thursday, will be the first against Ramaphosa, since he took office as president in May 2019.
The ATM says this motion was planned before the outbreak of COVID-19 and the party will not be deterred.
